A Beautiful Wood Bed With a Past

The story goes… Sweden’s King Gustav visited France about 250 years ago and brought home an all consuming passion for French neoclassical furniture design. He gave orders to his furniture makers to give him the same style and design he had seen in France. However, the ornate features so prominent in French design at the time were negated and ignored by the practical Swedish woodworkers, but they kept a few elegant arches and scalloping along the edges of different furniture pieces including the design of this patinaed Gustavian Bed.

Made from the century old wood of razed buildings, this wood bed is deeply patinaed and richly hued from age and weathering. If the beauty of the design and the reclaimed wood weren’t enough, the bed’s artisan hand-planed the wood to a smooth finish allowing for the texture of fir knots, nail heads and weathering to show through then a coat of hard oil wax was applied to highlight the beauty of the wood. Wow, I could live in a bed like this. Simply beautiful. What do you think? I really love Swedish style with a little French frou-frou thrown in.
