Let There Be Light: Tips for Using Floor Lamps

Got a lot of shadows, but not a lot of space? The vertical illumination provided by floor lamps provides the light you need without taking up a lot of room. Today’s standing lamps are much better designed than those of past decades, with sturdy, non-tip bases and heat-safe shades.
When choosing a floor lamp, consider the following:

  • What purpose will it serve? Do you need floor lamp lighting that will illuminate an entire space, or should it provide targeted light for a specific activity, such as a reading lamp? Torchiere floor lamps, designed with inverted “V”-shaped shades, are a popular choice for banishing shadows in corners. There are also reading lamps with adjustable necks that allow you to direct the lighting to meet your needs, ideal for reading or sewing.

  • What’s your décor style? If your space is more contemporary, you may prefer floor lamp lighting made from glass, steel, or metal, with cutting-edge angles and designs. For traditional rooms, you may want to choose an oak wood floor lamp with a conservative shade. You’ll also find antiqued Old-World brass floor lamps with intricate scrollwork and stained-glass shades.

  • Where will the floor lamp live? Choose a space that will provide maximum lighting without getting in the way of foot traffic. You’ll also need to decide how you’ll operate the lamp—ideally, it should be controlled by a convenient light switch or dimmer.

Traditional Floor Lamps with a Twist

Crystal Six Light Up Lighting floor Lamp Schonbek designers were certainly thinking out of the traditional floor lamps box when they created the Crystal Six Light Floor Lamp for their Rose Collection. They took the incredible look of one of the Rose Collection chandeliers and fashioned it into what can only be called a magnificent floor lamp. Instead of hanging from the ceiling, this six light chandelier is on top of a floor lamp base.

The beauty of crystal raindrops, faceted crystal beads and lovely green crystal leaves decorating multiple clear crystal vases make this lamp a true showpiece. There are several choices available in finishes and crystals.

The company suggests two options, "You can treat this lamp as a statuesque floor candelabrum with exposed candles, or order the optional granny shades for a nouveau Victorian flavor."  The shades are sold separately.

Whether you choose to use this lamp in the bedroom or formal living room, we think you'll smile every time you pass by.

Incorporate Torchieres in Your Traditional Decor

Tendril Three-light Torchiere To light a dark corner or make a statement in a large entry room in pairs, torchieres achieve these and many other interior design objectives. Traditional floor lamps, also known as torch lamps, started out as candelabras often boasting two to three lights atop a tall wood or metal stand.

The design was introduced to France in the late 17th century and by that time accommodated just one candle. These lights were considered revolutionary in lighting large rooms when the number of candles was increased.

Today’s torchiere still offers ample uplight and traditional styling, but instead of candles, it is all electric. For instance, the Tendril Three-light Torchiere is reminiscent of its candle-lit predecessors with its Scavo candle-shaped shades and the nature-inspired motif of its bronze finished steel triple stand. Scavo glass undergoes a multi-step process which creates a diffused glow when lit, similar to that of candle light. This beauty would compliment a traditional or country decor.

Floor Lamps For Dark Spaces

If you need to shed some light on an otherwise dimly lit room or dark corner, the right floor lamp will provide the light you need. Most floor lamps will give you more light than the average table lamp and come in practically endless styles and configurations. Some of the modern floor lamps come configured with a multidirectional adjustable head or heads, while other styles provide up light or down light respectively.

Choose your floor lamp configuration based on the activities you’ll be performing in the room. If you intend to read, then choose  a floor lamp with an adjustable head or a down light, if you need it to provide more light to the room overall, choose an up light such as a torchiere floor lamp. The three styles shown here will give you an idea of the lighting configurations available.
