Today's contemporary wall sconces have their historical roots in ancient Egyptian, where wall mounted lights were used in temples, tombs and hallways. Wrought iron wall sconces are also closely tied to the castles of Renaissance and Medieval Europe. The Scrolled Taper Wall Sconce with Glass by Hubbardton Forge is a modern interpretation of those European sconces, using ancient hand-forging methods.
The Scrolled Taper shows a curvy wrought iron body in a variety of finishes from black to satin steel and a hand-blown glass bowl shade. The shade is offered in Saffra which is a buttery mottled glass, in acid-etched Stone or showy Opal.
Giclee shades have hit the wall with contemporary wall sconces, sometimes called swing arm wall lamps. We've seen a lot of these beautiful shades on hanging pendant lamps, but they're really quite special on a swing arm fixture.
The Tempo Retro Dots and Waves Plug-in Swing Arm Wall Light is all decked out with a retro patterned giclee shade and brushed steel finish and looks like it just stepped out of a Mid-Century modern house. Great as a reading light, we think a pair of these lamps would be perfect on either side of a contemporary bed.
This interior wall sconce is out of this world gorgeous. The Cristal de Lisbon Wall Sconce with its graceful leaf designs and dangling crystals is incredible when lit with rows of crystals and its golden bronze finish glowing. Place them on either side of an elegant mirror in a formal powder room or in an entry with a piece of complimentary art hanging in between two. There are so many ways to incorporate these charming wall lamps into your French, traditional, shabby chic or eclectic interior.

Italian artist and accessory designer, Hans Peter Neidhardt is crazy talented. In his Venice-based studio, he creates beautifully illuminated and colorful wall sconces by using a 500 year old master glassblowing technique called incalmo. This technique allows Neidhardt to combine two or more glass “cups” that are connected while hot creating horizontal bands of colorful blown glass. He combines the incalmo with various colored glass patterns (murrines) to make his incredible wall sconces and other wall lighting designs.
Neidhardt’s color-infused wall lamps look lovely hung on either side of a large oval or rectangular mirror in a bath or a powder room. Their brilliant uplighting gives a warm ambience to any space and their fine art design make for a great conversation piece.
