Split-Personality Seating: Choosing the Perfect Bench

A seat that goes above and beyond the call of duty, a bench can serve a multitude of purposes. In addition to providing a convenient place to sit, it can also double as a storage solution, an ottoman, an occasional table, or a decorative accent. Benches fit nicely in areas that can’t accommodate tables or other larger furnishings, and their low profiles won’t block views or conversations. Below are some of our favorite ways to incorporate benches:

• When placed in an entryway, a hall tree bench adds a warm, welcoming touch for visitors. It also serves as a convenient “staging area” for purses, bags, and other miscellany.
• Got a lot of stuff but not a lot of space? A storage bench provides an easy way to conceal clutter. In the bedroom, use it to house extra blankets and linens. In a foyer or mud room, a lidded bench keeps shoes and coats out of sight and easily accessible.
• An upholstered bench at the bottom of a bed adds an elegant touch while accommodating throws, slippers, and other bedroom essentials.
• In a kid’s bedroom or playroom, a cushioned storage bench provides a comfortable resting place while keeping toys off the floor and neatly tucked away.
