Popular Sofa Style Guide

We’ve been featuring quite a few sofas on the blog lately and we thought it would be beneficial for our readers to create a post specific to sofa styles. While this is just a start, we’ll have to follow up with additional sofa style posts to cover them all.

When you go to buy a sofa do you go for a particular style or do you go by what hits your fancy? Some DYI home decorators stay true to a particular period or style, while others like to mix it up and lean toward the eclectic. No matter which group you are in, it always helps to know a bit about the design and style history of a piece and can be fun to learn.

Next time you’re out shopping with the girls, you can say, “Oh look at that lovely Cabriole sofa or check out the clean lines of that Lawson piece.” It’s easy to impress others with knowledge they may not have. So with that in mind, here's a StylePath visual guide to popular sofa styles, a few modern sofas and few classic sofas, to get you started.

Tuxedo

English

Camelback
Very traditional and highly formal the Camelback was first made popular in the 18^th century by Thomas Chippendale.

Cabriole
Can’t leave Louis XV’s Cabriole out of the line up. Formal and stately with its curvy body and delicately carved legs, this sofa would look terrific in a French style interior or even shabby chic. Pictured here: Wisteria Linen European Settee

Mid-Century Modern
This is the look we featured earlier in our "Mad Men" post. Straight and all about its angled look, the mid-century modern sofa often features chrome legs. Picture here: Room & Board Andre Sofa

Lawson
Leaning toward the modern side, the Lawson is all about its boxy look, but at times, it is seen with rolled arms softening its streamlined appearance at bit. Pictured here: Baxton Studios Coco Sofa

Sectional
Highly modular, the sectional comes in a wide variety of components and configurations and even style; from a formal look with rolled arms and curved back to a modern straight-lined style. Pictured here: Gus Modern Carter Sectional Sofa

Mid Century Modern "Mad Men" Style

You see it everywhere, from House Beautiful to Mid Century Modernist, so I thought StylePath should take part in lauding the interior design of the hit series "Mad Men". It really is undeniably chic and impeccably done and surely not “textbook mid-century modern America” as Dan Bishop, Production Designer of the "Mad Men" set explains.  

Sleek chrome, vinyl and teak wood are at the forefront of this ‘60s style with a mix of 50s and 40s thrown in to make it authentic. Danish modern takes front stage in Don Draper's office with an all teak desk. The sofas in other areas of the office are boxy very reminiscent of Herman Miller’s Goetz Sofa.

Home Decor Blog Neighbors and Friends

I got a bit antsy to get out and about on the web--sometimes you get tired of your own voice and need some company--so I decided to check out what my fellow home decor bloggers are up to. Wow, this is fun....take a look at what’s happening around our virtual world today and tell me it doesn’t make you smile. No matter where I go or what I see, I am always amazed at the creativity people have inside flowing out and molding itself into some kind of wonderful matter, whether it’s a chair, leather sofa, a fabric pattern or a simple lamp shade. We humans are fascinating creatures. Enjoy what I found on my trip around the neighborhood.

I couldn’t get out without stopping by our good blog friends, Vish and Asia, over at Living with White. Ooooh, they’ve got the pristine and fabulously molded Eames plastic white armchair. Those Eames boys, Charles and Ray, really knew how to design a great place to sit.

Pink Seven Sofa and Betsey Johnson

Not all ladies love pink, especially in our decor. I was on the fence about it until I saw these great shots of the absolutely splendid pink apartment Betsey Johnson designed (is there anything this woman can’t do?) A little pink goes a long way, but a lot of pink goes on for miles! I got curious to see what pink pieces we have on StylePath, so here is a living room sofa that's bold and pink, it would surely get the nod from Ms. Johnson herself.

Color Lovers Go Neutral

Here's a bit of design advice for all you color lovers out there. If you have a thing for color (the brighter the better, you say?) then choose your bigger upholstered pieces (sofas, lounge chairs, settees and living room chairs) in neutrals of beige, taupe, ivory, white, gray and black. Pairing big neutral pieces with favorite or trending colors has become a popular practice as we look to design in more budget conscience ways.

With a neutral canvas in place, you can go wild with a colorful palette you love for accessories, art, accent pieces and walls. If you like things to be fresh and exciting, a neutral base allows you to change things up according to seasonal trends or on a whim. You’ll never get bored with your décor again.

Design Tip: Nothing is bland about neutral tones when you know how to use them to their best advantage. If you tend to like cooler colors such as blue, green and violet then go with a white that has a cool bluish undertone. If you like warmer colors like red, orange and yellow then choose a white with a warmer yellow undertone.
