Contemporary Table Lamp Goes Retro

If you're going modern or contemporary in your living room or entry, ceramic table lamps may be the first ones that come to mind, but we've found something that takes retro lamps in an entirely different direction.

First of all, we know about lamps around here, but I didn't have any idea that recycled aluminum could be handspun to make the body of a contemporary table lamp. But, that exactly what Babette Holland did with her Green Striped Gemini Table Lamp. Not only is the body spun aluminum but it's done in brown and green stripes. No two are exactly alike. The designer says they are reminiscent of 1950s drink tumblers. Topped with a gold silk shade, the Gemini Table Lamp is perfect for a modern interior.

Just imagine this lamp or a pair of them on a long sleek table in the foyer? Or, think about showing them off at either end of a cool green or chocolate velvet sofa. This is a retro look that's showing up again in today's rooms.

Bankers Lamps and Dragonflies

An updated whimsical take on the iconic brass bankers lamps with their green shades, the Dale Tiffany Dragonfly Banker's Lamp combines a bit of history and a touch of art deco. Its history comes from the weary banking accountants who worked the night through, bringing order their ledger books by the light of those green-shaded lamps during the 1800s. Nostalgic Tiffany Table Lamps

One of the most enduring antique table lamp styles is the Tiffany table lamp. Louis Comfort Tiffany originally developed Tiffany stained glass beginning in 1878, but today the term Tiffany lamps is used loosely, generally referring to any lamp designed with a shade done in the Tiffany stained glass style. Modern versions may or may not be made entirely of glass.

For example, the John Timberland Mica Tiffany Style Mission Table Lamp is topped by a shade made of glass and mica formed into a beautiful geometric pattern. The shading and pattern of the mica contribute to the unique look of this lighting piece.

Called a Tiffany style lamp, it combines that stained glass look with mission style in the shape of the shade and the design of the wood base. The night light built into the base adds functionality and an extra touch of beauty to the lamp. We think this one would look great in a mission style home office.

Get Your Glow On

They call it a “desk” lamp, but this retro ball of fun could illuminate most any space in your home. If your place is contemporary, modern or transitional, here’s a few niches where we think decorative lamps would look absolutely fab:

• Take two and let them highlight the top of your buffet, credenza, fireplace mantel or as bedside table lamps.
• Put one next to your favorite reading chair—caution you may not be able to take your eyes off it.
• Stick one on a table in your entry way to welcome visitors.
• Set one on your desk. (OK, we gave in on this one.)

The Glow Lamp’s dual controls make it easy to enjoy several lighting levels. Not only does it have a light on top, the globe base down below glows too.
